Paving the way for sustainable development in Africa

In the world of international development, the integration of research into programming is essential for creating impactful and sustainable change. University of Missouri Assistance Program-Ghana (UMAP-Ghana) recognizes this importance and has made it a central focus of their work since their establishment in 2013. As an International Non-Governmental Organization staffed and managed by Ghanaians, UMAP-Ghana is uniquely positioned to understand the specific needs and challenges facing the communities they work with, and to develop tailored solutions based on rigorous research and evidence.

UMAP-Ghana’s vision and mission to facilitate the integration of research for development into development programming for rapid socio-economic development in Africa is not just a lofty goal, but a necessary approach for driving meaningful change. By grounding their programs in data-driven research, UMAP-Ghana is able to design initiatives that are targeted, effective, and sustainable. Whether it is their agricultural livelihoods projects promoting market-oriented farming, their trade capacity building programs supporting regulatory harmonization, or their partnership with the African Regional Economic Communities on food safety initiatives, UMAP-Ghana is able to make a real impact through their research-informed programming.

One key example of UMAP-Ghana’s commitment to integrating research into their work is the TEDMAG Project, a five-year initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada through the Modernising Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) program. In partnership with the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Missouri, UMAP-Ghana is implementing a comprehensive capacity-building program that is enhancing the curricula of agricultural colleges and providing training for extension agents. By conducting research, developing new tools and manuals, and facilitating nationwide training, UMAP-Ghana is helping to modernize agriculture in Ghana and build the skills and knowledge needed for sustainable development.

Additionally, UMAP-Ghana’s involvement in the Africa Food Safety Initiative (AFSI), funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service, highlights their commitment to promoting science-based regulatory frameworks and standards across the African continent. By working with regional economic communities and the African Union, UMAP-Ghana is supporting efforts to meet international trade standards, improve food safety, and ensure sustainable agricultural practices.

In Summary, UMAP-Ghana plays a crucial role in development programming by integrating research into its initiatives, creating evidence-based solutions that have a lasting impact on communities. As a key partner of the University of Missouri, UMAP-Ghana leads efforts in driving socio-economic development in Africa through research-informed programming, demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence and innovation for a brighter future across the continent.
